ACE has welcomed the launch of the public consultation on a major investment in high speed rail. It is hoped this will support growth and economic development across the country.
ACE and CECA published its transport infrastructure cuts survey in late 2010. The study found that firms felt inefficient rail and road infrastructure cost them an average £103,000 per year. This would amount to a cost to the UK economy of more than £100 billion each year.
Nelson Ogunshakin OBE, ACE chief executive, said: “ACE welcomes the long-term thinking and leadership behind plans to improve the country’s rail infrastructure. We look forward to supporting this consultation. This is a bold step to raise UK infrastructure capacity to standards already in place in other European countries.”
The Department for Transport has launched a consultation into a “Y” shaped scheme that will run from London to Birmingham and from Birmingham to Manchester and Leeds. Connections to existing lines will allow other parts of the country to benefit from direct travel through the high speed network.
Nelson Ogunshakin said: “Investment in infrastructure is key to revitalising the UK economy and generating growth and jobs across the country. We are pleased to see this consultation reflect that and it is now important to engage widely and build public support.”
