ACE welcomes decision to appoint a Chief Construction Adviser

Issued: 27 August 2009

The Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) strongly welcomes the decision by the Government to appoint a Chief Construction Adviser.  ACE has consistently argued for such an appointment and, along with other industry bodies, has engaged with the Government over this.

ACE believes that it is essential to appoint the right person for the role.  The appointee must have sufficient energy, knowledge and respect of the industry in order to drive through their stated objectives and deliver real improvements within the construction sector.  Stronger industry expertise at the heart of Government will help deliver greater value for money.

Nelson Ogunshakin, ACE chief executive, said: “I am delighted by this decision.  We hope that the Chief Construction Adviser will deliver the critical leadership needed to balance the needs of industry with political and economic drivers.”

However, it is vital that the Chief Construction Adviser is given sufficient authority and resources to do the job.  Strategic leadership will not be enough – the appointee must be in a position to deliver real, positive outcomes.  They must have an unconstrained reporting line in order to be an effective advocate for industry stakeholders.

Nelson Ogunshakin added: “While we firmly believe the new role will ensure stronger leadership for construction, it is critical that the right person is appointed.  ACE and other industry bodies hope to work with the Government to ensure that excellent candidates are put forward for the role.”
