ACE supports development of charter for infrastructure efficiency

Issued: 27 June 2011

ACE, working with Infrastructure UK, CECA, ICE and the Construction Products Association (CPA), has helped to develop a charter promoting effective behaviours by government and industry that are needed to reduce the cost of delivering infrastructure in the UK.  The development of the charter follows on from the publication of the Infrastructure Cost Review Implementation Plan.

The charter sets out seven commitments for government and four for industry.  Government has committed to provide improved transparency around forward programmes, encourage innovation, group projects into efficient longer-term programmes, focus on outcomes, and improve procurement and commissioning.

Industry will be expected to be coordinated in its liaison with government, be proactive in supporting cost and waste reduction initiatives, develop long-term strategies to invest in innovation, and promote industry collaboration and joint venturing to drive growth.
Nelson Ogunshakin OBE, ACE chief executive, said: "Infrastructure UK has set out an ambitious programme of change for both the government client and our industry, and it is essential that we all work together to deliver an infrastructure sector that is fit for the 21st century.

"The charter is at the heart of this change, defining and delivering a new model for behaviours by both the client and the supply chain. Our four organisations welcome the chance to play a part in this process, bringing together the experience of the whole supply chain to support implementation of the charter across the industry".

ACE, CECA, ICE and CPA will also set up a programme to monitor progress toward implementation of the charter.  This will be reported on annually, and timed to feed into the Government Construction Board’s annual reporting.
