Issued: 14 June 2010

The Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) congratulates Douglas Oakervee OBE, Jean Venables OBE and Scott Steedman on being awarded CBEs in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours.  All three were given the award for services to engineering.

ACE Advisory Board member Douglas Oakervee has had held several prestigious roles that include project director for the Hong Kong Airport, director of the London Gateway project, executive chairman of Crossrail and is currently non-executive chairman of Laing O'Rourke Construction Hong Kong Limited.  He has also acted as an adviser to the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, on the feasibility of a new airport in the Thames Estuary.

Jean Venables was president of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 2008-2009.  She has been closely involved in flood risk management matters for many years and her service as chairman of the Thames Region Flood Defence Committee was recognised by the award of the OBE in the 2004 New Year's Honours.  Dr Venables is also a visiting lecturer at Southampton University and Imperial College.

Scott Steedman is vice president of the Royal Academy of Engineering and a former vice president of the Institution of Civil Engineers.  Dr Steedman has worked on major infrastructure and building projects around the world, including acting as a task leader on the US Government’s Interagency Task Force investigating the flooding in New Orleans.  He is a former Cambridge University lecturer and currently serves on the UK Government’s Defence Scientific Advisory Council.

Nelson Ogunshakin, ACE chief executive, said: "On behalf of the ACE Board and Advisory Board, it is with great pleasure that I congratulate Douglas, Jean and Scott. Their awards recognise the contributions they have made to civil engineering in the UK and across the world. I know that they will continue to be significant figures in the engineering sector. They have always shown insight, imagination and leadership in the field of civil engineering."
