Work to widen a 2.5-mile long section of the A23 in West Sussex between Handcross and Warninglid to three lanes in each direction will begin on July 2nd, the Highways Agency has said.
The £76.9 million scheme is one of 14, worth at total of £1.4 billion, which the Highways Agency has pledged to start work on before 2015, subject to statutory processes.
Preparation on the site actually began in April last year with advance environmental work, with site clearance and tree felling in progress from October.
"Despite these tough times, the government is investing in transport infrastructure to help the economy grow, while successfully to delivering more for less," said roads minister Mike Penning.
"The improvements being made here will tackle congestion that affects drivers on the A23 every day."
The A23, which runs between London, near Waterloo station, and Brighton, at the Palace Pier, handles some 70,000 vehicles everyday.
