ACE Centenary Engineering Excellence Awards  

ACE Centenary Engineering Excellence Awards are open to all ACE members.

Criteria for project based awards  

To enter these awards, you must be in fully paid membership of ACE for 2013.

Entries for the project categories will be judged on the basis of overall engineering excellence, including project management where appropriate, in each of the ten categories, on the basis of the work performed by the entering firm only, and according to the rating guidelines listed below.

Rating guidelines

Exceeding client/owner needs
  • Did the engineer or entrant successfully engage the client/ owner in the overall project development process?•Is it an economical and cost-effective solution?
  • Was the project an appropriate design solution given the client’s needs?
  • How did the final cost relate to the original budget estimate?
  • How closely does the entrant’s solution meet the total goals of the client/owner?
  • Did the entrant meet the client’s time schedule?
Innovation and originality
  • Does the entry demonstrate the use of a new science or a breakthrough in the general knowledge of engineering?
  • Does the entry represent a unique application of different technology, techniques, materials or equipment?
Future value to engineering and perception by the public
  • Will the entry redefine current engineering thinking?
  • Does the entry advance a positive public image of engineering excellence?
Social, economic and sustainable design considerations
  • Is the engineering solution provided a sustainable one? 
  • Do the solutions identified produce secondary benefits of value to the community environment?
  • Does the entrant’s approach provide society with social, economic, or sustainable development benefits?
  • To what extent have whole-life costs been taken into account?
  • Is the public’s health, safety, or welfare significantly improved as a result of the entrant’s, and/or affected environments, contribution to the project?
Complexity
  • Did the entry successfully address very complex criteria or unique problems?
  • Were extraordinary problems of site, location, hazardous conditions, project requirements or similar elements present?
  • Did the entry require the use of out-of-the-ordinary technology or ingenuity forachievement of the project’s goals?
Criteria for Research and Ambassador categories
Research, Studies and Consulting Award
This category covers non-design services including, but not limited to: new products, materials and technologies, feasibility, basic research and studies, computer/software technology; technical papers; sustainable engineering solutions.

The entry which best demonstrates research quality and vision (methodological or interpretative) and its effectiveness or application in the engineering business sector will win the award.

Engineering Ambassador Award
Entries for this category must demonstrate a significant achievement and who has played a leading role in promoting consultancy and engineering to a wide audience.

The entry which best demonstrates why the person entered should win an award will win this category.
Judges  
A distinguished panel of judges, including constructors, engineers, clients, developers, financiers and the media, working in the public and private sectors, will critique and judge the entries. All winners will be featured in a special awards supplement and promoted throughout the industry via an extensive public relations campaign, highlighted on the ACE website and in ACE’s magazine, Impact.
