  Advanced certificate in construction mediation

1 October 2009

8.5 hours CPD

Intended for those who have completed the CEDR accredited Mediation skills training

ACE and CEDR have teamed up to offer advanced competence-based assessment in construction mediation. This one-day assessment will provide successful candidates with evidence of their sector specific competence above and beyond the general mediator accreditation offered by CEDR. Mediator accreditation provides a benchmark for basic mediation competence; the certification backs up the evidence provided by actual mediation experience and will help to reassure clients looking at mediators whose names are perhaps previously unknown to them.

The assessment is suitable only for those who have both mediator accreditation with a recognised accreditation provider and substantial construction mediation experience. Visit www.civilmediation.org to download a list of accredited providers in the UK, if you were accredited by a provider not listed, please send an e-mail to us with details of your date of accreditation and accreditation provider to iphillips@cedr.com. If you have construction dispute experience but are not an accredited mediator please visit www.cedr.com and view the Mediator Skills Training pages to see what it entails.

The assessment process
The assessment day will be a full day (08.30-18.00) and consist of construction dispute role-plays. Each mediator will conduct one mediation session and role-play for the assessment of other mediators. The role-plays will cover a range of common construction disputes and provide equal opportunity for mediators to demonstrate their competence in construction mediation.

General information for each of the role-plays will be sent out a month before the course. Confidential information the two-roles and the mediator session will be sent out one week before the course. Delegates will therefore need to set aside time for preparation for the course in the week before their assessment.

An ACCM assessor will be present throughout the assessment slots. In addition the assessment will be recorded by video. The faculty member present will do an assessment on the day and the recording of the assessment will be used in order to allow the assessment to be marked a second time by another ACCM assessor. Following the reconciliation of the faculty members’ assessments delegates will be informed of their results.

The assessor present will give 15 minutes confidential feedback to the mediator, with things that went well and areas to work on. The feedback session will not include information on whether the delegate has been successful in gaining certification.

The assessment criteria
The delegates will be assessed against three areas of competency: Relationship skills; Process skills; Content skills. These are the same areas as are used for competency in the CEDR Mediator skills training, however the standard required is higher and delegates are required to demonstrate sector specific competence.
