ACE welcomes FIDIC letter to UN on climate change
Issued: 28 September 2009

As the hosting nation for the FIDIC 2009 conference, the Association for Consultancy and Engineering, ACE, welcomes the open letter FIDIC has sent to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.  The letter states that FIDIC believes it is “vital that agreement is reached not simply on carbon emission targets but on meaningful action to mitigate and adapt to climate change which already affects our world”.  The letter will also be sent to the relevant world bodies and the leaders of the G20 countries.

The letter goes on to say: “We believe that consulting engineers are part of the solution to the result of resource conflicts, natural disasters, security of energy and transport supply, economic crises, and massive poverty.  Our recent report ‘State of the World’ illustrates these points.  It is vital we work together to contain the earth temperature rise to 2ºC. The engineering profession globally is ready to use its enormous skills and innovation to ensure we meet the targets in time.”

Nelson Ogunshakin, ACE Chief Executive, said: “Climate change is the biggest challenge humankind faces.  The consultancy and engineering sector is ready to play their part to tackle it but we need a firm mandate from the Copenhagen conference in order to help governments reach their carbon emission targets.”
