A total of 414 NHS-owned sites have been identified as potential locations for development, comprising an area of around 800 hectares (ha).
Of these, 122 are bigger than 1 ha, 14 are bigger than 10 ha, 257 could be used for housing or mixed-use schemes, 11 for commercial premises and 12 for community facilities, reports Construction News.
One of the sites, at 65 ha, could provide the foundations for up to 450 houses.
For only a third of the plots identified are the trusts that own them undecided on whether they are definitely surplus, opening up the possibility that tens of developments could begin on the land with no constraints.
Commenting on the figures, EC Harris global account leader for health Conor Ellis told the news provider: "There are pockets of the NHS that haven't been used for years because trusts were saving them for a rainy day.
"Now they're being disposed of 20 years later."
According to the National Housing Federation, homelessness charity Shelter and the Chartered Institute of Housing, there is currently a "burgeoning housing crisis" in the UK.
