DP World, the owner of London Gateway, has announced it has selected a contractor to build a railway terminal at the site capable of hosting 34-wagon trains.
London Gateway, which is set to become the UK's first 21st-century major deep-sea container port and Europe's largest logistics park when it opens in 2013, will see a third of its throughput come by rail and DP World says this new terminal will help to "future proof" the site.
Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering will develop what will be the first of three rail terminals, as well as double-track the branch line to London Gateway, which is being built on the north bank of the River Thames.
Marshall Scott, managing director at Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering, said: "We are delighted to be working with London Gateway to build this important rail infrastructure which will help make the UK more competitive and create new options for distribution of freight."
DP World owns 49 terminals worldwide and its flagship Jebel Ali facility is in Dubai.
