1,800-home Tyne development to go ahead

A 1,800 home development on the banks of the River Tyne is to go ahead, after planning permission was granted.

The £265 million project will see homes built on a site in Scotswood, Newcastle spanning 66-hectares and phase one will get underway in the summer.

This will see the construction of 378 homes that conform to level four of the government's Code for Sustainable Homes, which sets targets for energy efficiency and sustainability.

Scotswood is one of the most run-down areas of the city and the council is welcoming the news the regeneration project will go ahead.

Newcastle City Council Scotswood Ward councillor Hazel Stephenson said: "The provision of quality housing for families within a well connected, safe, accessible and healthy local environment represents a welcome step in the regeneration of Benwell, Scotswood and the wider area."

The joint venture comprises Newcastle City Council and developers Barratt, Keepmoat and Yuill.
