  £650 million contract for National Grid awarded
 

A £650 million contract to update and maintain infrastructure for the National Grid has been awarded to a joint venture of firms.

Babcock, AMEC and Mott MacDonald Group, have been awarded a five year extension on the existing Electricity Alliance West framework, which will see overhead power lines upgraded and maintained across the UK.

Up to 2021, the National Grid is planning to invest some £20 billion in its gas and electricity transmission infrastructure of which around £650 million has been awarded to the joint venture.

Roger Gillespie, managing director of critical assets at Babcock said:  "I am delighted we have been awarded this contract extension to 2017 and look forward to building on the strong partnership we have established with National Grid and our partners over the years."

The National Grid is responsible for providing gas and electricity to homes and businesses across the UK.

It also has operations in the US.
