Peel Ports today (March 5th) announced that it has commenced the procurement phase for the construction of a new £300 million port terminal in Liverpool.
Liverpool 2 will open in 2015 and will accommodate two vessels of up to 13,500 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).
It is estimated that 5,000 jobs will be created by the project, which forms a key part of the Mersey Ports Master Plan - a 20-year vision for growth and future developments at the Port of Liverpool.
Peel Ports Mersey managing director Gary Hodgson said: "By any standard it is a significant development and a major investment. By commencing the procurement process today, we have shown our commitment to the building of Liverpool 2."
Last week it was announced, the Port of Hartlepool is to become the hub for the Teesside Offshore Windfarm Project.
Over the next seven months, EDF Energy will use the port as a hub for all the materials and components needed to build the wind farm.
