The University of Cambridge has been awarded planning permission for a £1 billion development on a 150 hectare site in north-west Cambridge.
Included in the proposals are 1,500 homes for key University and College employees, 1,500 homes for sale, accommodation for 2,000 students, 100,000 sq m of research facilities, as well as community facilities.
It is hoped that phase one of the project - comprising around 956 homes, accommodation for 300 students and the site's local centre - will start in early 2013 and be completed halfway through 2015.
The university has been working on plans since 2003 and project director Roger Taylor said the considerations of local people has been key.
"It is very important that our development is integrated into the existing community and brings positive benefits to local people," he explained.
"The new community facilities will be open to all and everyone will have access to large areas of new open space for sports, walking and other activities."
