£150m Shrewsbury shopping centre gets go-ahead

Planning permission has been granted for a £150 million shopping centre in Shrewsbury.

UK Commercial Property Trust (UKCPT) has also signed a pre-let agreement with Debenhams for the creation of a 95,000 sq ft department store at the New Riverside site, which will replace the existing facility.

The plans will see the existing Riverside building demolished and replaced by a new 225,000 sq ft complex that will be integrated with the Darwin and Pride Hall centres to form one giant shopping arena.

As well as the Debenhams department store, there are plans for 50 new shops and ten restaurants, as well as offices and car parking.

Commenting about the progress made, Christopher Hill, chairman of UKCPT, said: "The Council's decision to approve our plans and the signing of a pre-let with a leading national department store operator in Debenhams represent a major step forward for the planned New Riverside redevelopment."
